WHY WE DON'T CELEBRATE "EASTER"

This is a pretty good article explaining the pagan origins of this holiday. My favorite part is the scripture at the beginning. Many will say, "But we are not celebrating that. We are worshiping God and these things no longer symbolize what they did then." God has not given us that option of worshiping Him as we see fit. He has not only told us not to worship other gods, but also, not to worship Him the WAY the heathen worship their gods. We cannot in good conscience participate in something so vile and evil in God's sight. I am thankful we have found a church that does not celebrate pagan festivals.

Big Girl finished up her math book this week. Now she will just read the Richard Maybury books we have, and when she is finished with those, she will do an economics book. Then, her final math will be Lifepacs Consumer Math. She will be finishing up her English book next week, and move on to her next writing book, Wordsmith Craftsman. That is one of the countless wonderful things about homeschooling. When you finish one thing, you can just move onto the next, at your own pace. No waiting around for the teacher, or for another school year.

Little girl is doing great with her new math. It is super easy right now, but will get more difficult as she goes. I added Vocabulary Vine to her subjects this week. It is Greek and Latin root study. She is doing it in a notebook instead of making the cards. She is also relearning cursive, as she doesn't use it and had forgotten it. I am just making out letters and words for her to copy. She has taken to writing some of her own stories and poetry on the computer, like big sister. :-)

Big Girl really enjoyed her literature this time. She is just about finished with her math book. Next week, she will finish it up.

Little Girl was doing well with her pre-algebra, but I don't think it has enough practice on the new things she is learning. I ordered her Key to Fractions, and she will start that next week. She probably could have done fine without the extra, but there is no rush. She even figured out how to do cross multiplication on her own. She was supposed to be using a different method to determine which of two fractions was greater, and she told me she had found an easier way. It was something that wouldn't be taught for a few more lessons. :-) She is continuing to do copy work to cement her multiplication tables.

Another full week. Little Girl seems to have forgotten her cursive, so we are going to work on that again. I will just make out worksheets for her. I added multiplication copy work this week, so she can get those facts down thoroughly before she moves into the harder stuff in pre-algebra. She knows a lot more of them than I thought, just by using the charts I made for her.

Big Girl is really slogging through The House of the Seven Gables. I am letting her listen to the audio book. Hawthorne wrote during the Romantic period, which means he used an awful lot of words to say a very little thing. :-)

CHANGES

I am making a couple changes for Little Girl this week. We have been using the spelling words in CLE Language Arts, but I am finding they are just too random, and many of them, because it is a Mennonite curriculum, are simply words that we don't use. I am going to start using the list from the Wise Guide we already have. I will give her a pretest each week until she misses ten or so words, then use those for her weekly spelling.

I am also going to incorporate dictation back in, using Spelling Wisdom, which we already have.

Another full week. Had to switch Little Girl's math to Teaching Textbooks pre-algebra. Life of Fred fractions just didn't have enough instruction on new ideas for her. I will probably use it as a review for her, like I did for Big Girl. I am also adding Spelling Wisdom dictation to Little Girl's line up. Here is the week's accomplishments. Again, pretty much the same. I just want to keep a record of what we do each week, even if it isn't exciting. :-)

WEEKLY REVIEW

We had a great full week, with the girls now "officially" in grades 10 and 6.

We read from Hebrews this week, and our new memory passage is Psalm 1.

We went over three more elements from the periodic table, using the online videos and book and charts.

Our new artist is Rembrandt. Our composer is Pachelbel.

We continued to read a poem daily, as well as continuing the book, The Deadliest Monster. The girls have been using the stuff they are learning in this book as they are doing their own fun reading. :-)

We started a biography on Albert Einstein this week, and read from our spine books for Middle Ages history. We also started a book on Joan of Arc today.

Big Girl did her math, systematic theology, spelling, and English. She read Rip Van Winkle and a short biography of Washington Irving for literature. She is also reading Men of Iron.

Little Girl did her math, language arts, reading, and map work. She is still reading a Wishbone book on Hansel and Gretel, a COFA book on Walt Disney, Misty's Twilight by Marguerite Henry, and her Nature Friend magazine. She finished up the CLP Nature Reader. She started a Geology book by Dr. John D. Morris and Book of Marvels by Richard Halliburton.

PLANS FOR NEW YEAR

Our "school" year runs from January to December, so the girls will be in "grades" 10 and 6 after the first of the year. We are really just continuing to read and finishing up a few odds and ends right now. Not a full schedule at all. These are our plans for the new year.

WEEKLY REVIEW

We started a new Bible memory passage this week. Philippians 4:4-7. The girls are still reviewing the "old" one, as well as each of them doing one of their poems each day.

We are going to be finishing up our Classical Karaoke for Kids book before the first of the year, so we can start back to doing one composer at a time.

I skipped quite a few artists that were on our list and we went with Pieter Bruegel the Elder for our current artist. His paintings are quite detailed and interesting to look at.

Our current country of study is Denmark.

We are pausing with our periodic table studies until after the first of the year, so we can finish up the Classical Karaoke book. We will begin again in January.

Still reading one or two poems a day from our anthology.

Still reading The Adventures of Jonathan Gullible and The Deadliest Monster daily. These two books are fascinating and contain much truth and much to think on.

Still reading Little Town on the Prairie a few days per week.

For Middle Ages, Big Girl is reading The White Company, by Doyle. I read from our TQ book and from Story of the Middle Ages spine this week on the Hundred Years War and various things surrounding that period.

For American history, we are reading White Star, a Dog on the Titanic. We will also be watching a documentary on the Titanic from Netflix, whenever it gets here.

Big Girl continues in her LBC math book, a couple lessons per week. She also does some writing on the computer every day, and we go over it together. She is still doing one vocabulary lesson per week, reading from her biology and history books, and is finishing up Chosen By God. She also did a spelling lesson this week.

Little Girl did her last MUS Delta lesson this week. She will do the final tests next week, then work on a few problems per day that I will print up for her until the end of the year. She will start the LOF fractions book then. She will be finishing up her CLE Language Arts 4 next week. Not sure if we will start the new level then, or wait. She has started doing a page daily in her Maps and Geography workbook again. She also completed a spelling lesson, and did her independent reading.
